Overview
Autism is a set of neurodevelopmental disorders that affect 1-2% of the human population. We are looking to combine genome screening data with behavioural relevant information from families to provide a comprehensive causative profile with these disorders. Data from screening thousands from Australians will be used to build an integrated protocol for the early diagnosis of autism.
Project
We are looking for PhD students to undertake a course of study/research in characterising the molecular profile of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Australian families. The project is part of the newly established Autism Cooperative Research Centre. The successful candidate(s) will use cutting edge genome technology, whole genome (exome) sequencing and statistical/computational analysis to identify putative causative genetic variants and associated biological pathways.
Required
The successful candidate(s) should have a First Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in the field of bioinformatics, computational science, molecular genetics or related discipline, with a strong interest in genomics and personalised medicine. Experience with programming language (Python, Perl, etc) and Unix/Linux operating system are desirable. Applicants must fulfil the PhD admission criteria for The University of Queensland, including English language requirements, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Scholarships and Remuneration
Appointment to the position will receive a PhD living allowance stipend that is funded by the Australian Autism CRC. The current scholarship rate is AUD$25,392 per annum (2014 rate, indexed annually, tax-free) for three years with a possible six month extension. Scholarships to cover tuition fees for high quality international applicants are also available via UQ's competitive scholarship rounds (3 rounds per year).
