Hello All,

I am wandering if there is standard about the graphical shape that used in many systems such as Pfam, SMART and others to represent protein domain architectures?

Specifically, how does the protein domain architectures evolved?

I read many papers but non of them said why this shape/colour associated with this domain or this family of protein..

Example: http://pfam.xfam.org/help#tabview=tab9 (here they mention the shape that they used but no reason why they use this shape for this domain, is it based on users preference or not)

Example 2: http://itol.embl.de/help/help.shtml#colorRan (the user inserts the colour and the shape for the domain architecture here)

I appreciate any papers or websites that may help me to understand more.
