I am a CSE student and I am entitled a project on running Hmmer on MIC Architecture. For this, I have started reading HMMER and what it does. What I am unable to comprehend is, why and where is protein sequence alignment and identifying protein homologous necessary?

When you get homologous regions from allignment across the families or species, then they are Conserved domains.Conserved domains in proteins play a crucial role in protein interactions, DNA binding, enzyme activity, and other important cellular processes.

I mean they are very very important for survival.
