We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant, to work on research projects funded by the Wellcome Trust (UK) on chlamydial infections, trachoma and other ocular infections. The post holder will conduct bioinformatic and statistical analysis to investigate the associations between 'omic data on clinical and epidemiological outcomes. The programme of work on Trachoma includes data collected from large cross-sectional and longitudinal studies including host genotyping studies, specific pathogen genotyping studies,16S-community profiling and host gene expression studies. The appointee will develop an integrated database; perform routine statistical analysis to assess data quality; develop tools and apply published methods to data-mine existing data sets; perform complex bioinformatics and statistical analysis across a range of 'omics data including performing sensitivity analyses; perform statistical analysis to investigate the associations of phenotypes with risk markers, to test pre-specified hypotheses, and generate new ones, concerning the determinants of these phenotypes. The appointee will also write up research results and disseminate research findings, including the development of web-based tools and visibility via social media. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and includes collaborative work in the UK and Tanzania.

The successful candidate will have a BSc/MSc in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, or a directly related discipline, have knowledge of applied statistics and mathematics. The candidate should have experience using Linux/Unix systems and working with the command line interface. Experience of programming in at least one of the following languages python, perl, java or another computer programming language. Experience using R or another statistical computing language will also be required.

The position is available via support from our Wellcome Trust Programme Grant award on the immunological determinants of protective immunity and immunopathology in human Chlamydia trachomatis infection, PI Professor David Mabey, Co-applicants Professor Robin Bailey, Dr Martin Holland and Dr Matthew Burton. The post is funded full-time for a period of 11 months, starting on 1st October 2015 and completing on the 31st August 2016.

Salary is on the Academic Pathway Grade 5 from £32,324 to £37,106 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).
