Postdoctoral researcher position open in Computational Biomedicine at Turku Centre for Biotechnology

A postdoc researcher position is available in the project directed by Dr. Laura Elo, Research Director in Bioinformatics at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, University of Turku, Finland (http://www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/elo/ and http://www.btk.fi/bioinformatics/).

Description of recruiting organization

University of Turku (http://www.utu.fi/en/) is a leading Finnish university with internationally acknowledged research and expertise. It promotes interdisciplinary research and provides students with high-quality research-based education. Turku Centre for Biotechnology (http://www.btk.fi/) is a joint department of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, providing high-end technologies and expertise to academic and industrial researchers with focus on discovering molecular events underlying biological function and identifying how this information can be used to improve life quality.

The Computational Biomedicine Group of Dr. Elo develops computational data analysis tools and mathematical modelling methods for biomedical research. A specific focus is on analysing and interpreting data generated by modern high-throughput biotechnologies, such as deep sequencing and mass-spectrometry-based proteomic assays. The eventual goal is to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of complex diseases, with a specific biomedical focus on Type 1 Diabetes.

Description of the position to fill

The postdoc will perform his/her main research activity in the Computational Biomedicine Group at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, Turku, Finland. In the same time he/she will be tightly connected with the national and international collaborators. The project involves development and application of computational and statistical methods for the analysis of high-dimensional molecular and clinical datasets with a focus on complex diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes or cancer. A particular objective of is to robustly characterize molecular signatures and networks at multiple levels and use the signatures to predict health and disease states.

A successful candidate has solid background in bioinformatics, statistics and computational biology, good expertise in statistical and bioinformatics software, and abilities to work in a multidisciplinary research environment.

The position is initially for two years, starting from January 1, 2016, with a possibility for extension, depending on the progress of the project. Starting date is negotiable.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a strong computational and statistical background. Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written, are required. Independence and self-driven attitude are highly appreciated, but the candidate should be able to work as part of a team as well. The candidate should hold a PhD degree or complete one within next months. Proven track record of publishing research results in high-ranked journals is appreciated. Experience with R, Matlab or other mathematical software is required.

The application including motivation letter, CV, list of publications, recommendation letters, copies of degree certificates and study transcript should be sent in one PDF-file to johanna.makela(at)utu.fi. Please include "postdoctoral researcher" as subject in the email. The deadline for the applications is 13th of December. For further information, please contact Research Coordinator Johanna Mäkelä johanna.makela(at)utu.fi or 02-333 8313.
