Programatically Access The Ncbi Images Database

Is it possible to download and extract images and metadata from the NCBI images database? This was formerly at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/images but is currently redirecting to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/. I would like to, for a given PubMed ID, be able to download the attached figures and legends, and hopefully have some kind of persistent identifier for each image.

Manually You can now find images in PMC articles through a simple PMC search. Here is NCBI’s example:
