Is there a script that can check for the latest version of a software package such as BedTools or Picard? I am using ubuntu 14.04. Thank you :).
both are hosted on github. Cloning the repos should download the latest versions.
Basically no, because there is not centralized repository for all Bioinformatic software. You'll have to, as Pierre points out, go and find each project's home page individually (usually on Github) and check there.
For what its worth, 'apt-get install some_bioinformatics_package' is a sure-fire way to get a 4-year-old version of something.
