We are seeking to recruit a Bioinformatics Support Engineer to work within the Pathogen Informatics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The Pathogen Informatics team is responsible for providing informatics support to members of the Pathogen Variation program, external collaborators, and visiting workers. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator and problem solver with strong interests in biological data and providing a high level of customer service. The candidate will work as part of a team of seven software developers and bioinformaticians, and will act as front line support for requests from members of the Pathogen program. The candidate will be responsible for monitoring and responding to user issues submitted to the helpdesk, managing and performing software installations, ensuring smooth running of data through automated analysis pipelines, performing submissions and updates to public data repositories (EBI and NCBI), and where appropriate assigning requests and bug reports to other developers in the team. The team is based on the principles of agile development and strongly promotes open source software development using Github for all software projects. This position is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to work in a dynamic informatics support team with opportunities to gain significant experience in areas such as next-generation sequencing technologies, advanced unix, bash scripting, software version control, software development practices, and bioinformatics analysis tools.
