Hello everyone,

me and my colleagues launched global chat for bioinformatics community - BioBit. It is very useful for discussions due to the "knowledge flowing" - today I ask a question about something, get an answer, tomorrow someone else asks the exact same question, and I will be able to help her / him. Or you can just discuss interesting news and papers.

Such format, in contrast to forums, allows providing the most relevant information in the very quick way and facilitates interesting discussions around the topic. It’s a new iteration of ICQ, Jabber, etc. with many chatrooms per team, in the very comfortable way.

In order to be invited there, you just need to go to the website http://bit.bioinf.me and write your e-mail there. You will get an invitation link in a couple of minutes (there are no direct registration, sadly). In the chat you can create public or private channels, send direct messages and files, etc.

Few cool examples from our experience:

  • channel for Russian machine learning community has almost 900 members in less than a year.

  • channel for Russian bioinformatics researchers has almost 200 members in less than 2 months.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to leave them here. My chat account is @vadimnazarov

Categorizing this as a "tool" until one of the site admins decides if this solicitation is appropriate for Biostars.

Forum tag is meant for discussions (as I understand it) on bioinformatics topics/opinions that stay on Biostars.

FYI, I'd avoid using "slack" in relationship to channels, that's inviting a lawsuit.

Thanks, do you think that "slack channel" instead of "slack" will be more suitable? Or do you have any other alternatives?

You'll want to drop the word "slack" completely. If you wanted to be clever, perhaps use some internationalized form of whatever "slack" or "slack off" is in your native language.

this looks like it is actually a slack channel though. don't see the issue here

For those unfamiliar with slack it sounds like OP has created a new application that is "like slack".

So this is just a channel on slack itself?

Ah, from the description it sounded more like a competitor for slack with a bioinformatics bent. Now that I click through it looks like you're absolutely correct. In that case you're totally right that there's zero issue :)
