Modeled after the Broad Institute’s Firehose analysis infrastructure, FireCloud democratizes data access and facilitates collaboration by providing a robust, scalable platform accessible to the community at large. Using the elastic compute capacity of Google Cloud, FireCloud empowers analysts, tool developers and production managers to perform large-scale analysis, engage in data curation, and store or publish results.

Users can upload their own analysis methods to workspaces or run the Broad Institute’s best practice tools and pipelines. FireCloud also includes tutorial workspaces as well as carefully curated open and controlled-access TCGA workspaces that users can clone. FireCloud supports the mission of TCGA by provisioning workspaces with curated data and best practice tools and pipelines. This will empower researchers across the globe to explore TCGA data in novel and innovative ways, and create new opportunities for cancer research.

Note that Firecloud requires a google cloud project and is, therefore, not free.

@Sean: Firecloud is not free (you do say that an account would need to be setup with billing info in the tutorial above) but it may be best to mention that in this post as well. Are you able to provide some guidance on typical costs?

Its say that the firecloud is for free but download will be associated with costs? So does that mean if am working with public data and running some analysis, once I see the output, for getting the results in my local machine ,there is a cost associated? Please walk us through the typical cost break up then.

Google compute (which Firecloud is based on) is not free (at least after you burn through the free allowance that google gives you for trying it out). The tutorial clearly says that you need to setup billing with google before taking the tutorial. With all cloud providers generally the data egress is subject to a charge. So downloading something (results) will be subject to a charge.

ah ok fair enough. I just read the pricing list from the google compute. So the pricing is only concerned with the google compute and not for Firecloud or any additional charges are also applicable? Just saw there is a form that asks to make a google billing account. Would like to know more. Thanks for highlighting @genomax2
