Preferred for what?

Each of those formats is used in particular software package (with exception of fasta).

File-format usually depends upon what you would like to do.

See this format list.

Some general description:

http://emboss.sourceforge.net/docs/themes/SequenceFormats.html

Some other examples:

http://emboss.open-bio.org/html/use/ch05s02.html

GCG-format is describled shortly here (link is below).

https://books.google.ru/books?id=Y331BwAAQBAJ&pg=RA2-PT32&lpg=RA2-PT32&dq=what+is+the+meaning+of+the+checksum+in+GCG+file+format&source=bl&ots=65z3mhB_GF&sig=ROPMWIzE8rUBZ-KStkHzRwY7hok&hl=ru&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwin19zM4evPAhXFO5oKHa_OAckQ6AEINDAD#v=onepage&q=what%20is%20the%20meaning%20of%20the%20checksum%20in%20GCG%20file%20format&f=false

Chapter 3 1 0

"The GCG format has one notable signature, i.e., 2 dots (. ... modified by a text editor and the checksum has been altered, GCG programs will not recognize this sequence. ... By default, GCG does not require consistent naming and UNIX does not insist on file types."
