A post should not be closed just because there is a six year old prior post on the same topic.

The old post was still updated and is fairly comprehensive, as I checked. I am still confused by this 'rule' which is very different from stack exchange, and I would like to ask the community to make such policies more explicit if they exist. Or discuss them openly.

The rules are very different from StackExchange and I described the reasoning in great detail many times.

The answer to questions such as "how do I sort a list in Python" does not change much over the years. It would be counterproductive to have dozens of threads about that.

Bioinformatics is different - the answers will change, sometimes radically and it would be difficult to maintain a single coherent thread to it. I myself would not expect that advice from a three year old thread would be correct or relevant. Even less the advice given nearly six years ago.

The right course of action is to point a user to the resource but there is no need to close the post - that act adds no value to the site. Answer the question with the link to the correct post, this helps the user and we all move on.

The issue of unwarranted closing pops up regularly and this functionality will be removed from this site on the next update.

There are several well reasoned posts here and everywhere on the internet that describe how toxic and negative the SE communities are - hence there is little reason to adopt their standards. You yourself have described experiences that seemed petty and arbitrary. Those demonstrate how both down-votes and closings add not add any value and only foster hard feelings and negativity.

Please, let's keep an open and transparent discussion on these topics, especially on the closing issue. I know you have argued for removing this functionality, but as there is a large volunteer community involved, such decisions must also be taken in a democratic community process. Biostars is built entirely on these volunteer contributions, therefore there should be a democratic process of making such decisions as a reward.
