I am a developer that wants to develop an electronic health record system and I have read several explanations about the electronic health record but I am not sure about the electronic health record's data type and storage. Fortunately I came across this forum that hopefully could help answer my questions.

  1. What is the format and data type to store patient's electronic health record? As far as I know there are some standards from HealthLevel 7 called CCD and CCR for the record and DICOM for the medical image.

  2. How is the electronic health record stored in the system as there are different data types avaialable such as patient's personal information, medical history, visit, and medical images from X-Ray and stuff? Is it using a relational database such as MySQL or Oracle or is it using other storage type to store? CCD and CCR is stored in XML format while some medical imnages are stored as DICOM file.
