Dr. January Weiner studied biology and mathematics at the Jagiellonian Univerity in Cracow, graduating in experimental evolutionary biology in 1996. He then moved to microbiology and transcriptomics, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg for work on the transcriptome of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Later, he worked on evolution of proteins in the bioinformatic group of Erich Bornberg-Bauer, and habilitated in 2009 in the area of evolutionary biology. Since 2009 he works at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology on high-throughput biomarkers in tuberculosis. He is the author or co-author of over 50 scientific papers with more than 1700 citations. His expertise includes statistical analysis and biological interpretation of high throughput data sets, phylogeny reconstruction, statistical programming, machine learning, transcriptomics and metabolic profiling.

Having personally taken Dr. Weiner's "Gene set and pathway analysis in high throughput (HT) data" course offered by Physalia I can say the course was well delivered and engaging. The training he gave was very interactive, which I think is the best way of learning - certainly 5-days well spent.

The course offered a great introduction to leveraging with Agilent (but not Affymetrix) microarray data available on SRA with limma, RNA-seq with edgeR, working with biomaRt, and various techniques for the analysis of gene set enrichments and pathway analysis (topGO, tmod, KEGGREST, pathview, WGCNA).
