Research Data Specialist

The University of Virginia seeks a service-oriented data specialist to join the Health Sciences Library’s Research and Data Services team supporting the UVA Health System’s biomedical research endeavors. This position will develop and provide consultation and education services supporting the preparation, technical management, and analysis of data for biomedical research.

The Environment

In today’s academic research environment, data plays a central role in how new knowledge is created. The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library is a fast paced collaborative environment that broadly defines its role in serving biomedical researchers though specialized bioinformatics instruction, training, and consultation.
Responsibilities

The Research Data Specialist will consult with researchers (faculty, staff, and students) on selection, implementation, and interpretation of data analytic methods to advance health research throughout the University of Virginia. The Specialist will assess educational needs and develop and provide consultations and training on quantitative data management and analytics, using open source tools that increase the reproducibility and replicability of research, such R, Python, and GitHub. The Research Data Specialist will collaborate with staff from other institutional units and pan-university efforts such as the UVA BioConnector, Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (THRIV), and Computation and Data Resource Exchange (CADRE).

Requirements

Master’s degree in Computer, Information, Data Science, or, academic discipline with quantitative research experience. Excellent communication skills. Desire to provide highly responsive user-centered services. Proficiency with one or more open source computational environments, either R or Python. Interest in providing instruction, both formal and informal, to varying audiences and skill levels. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work independently and on teams.
