Description: Postdoctoral research positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Herman in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Institute of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania.
The goal of laboratory is to apply biomedical informatics, epidemiology, statistics, and machine learning to the diagnosis, prediction, and management of cardiovascular disease. We collaborate broadly, including colleagues in the Penn Institute for Biomedical Informatics (IBI), Penn Medicine Data Analytics Core (DAC), Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Penn Medicine Predictive Healthcare group, and Cardiovascular Institute.
Specific projects will be defined collaboratively with the successful candidate. We are most interested in developing tools that can be rapidly implemented in clinical practice. Current projects include developing algorithms to identify patients with specific causes of secondary hypertension, identifying clinical features predictive of response to anti-hypertensive medications, and development of novel biomarker-informed strategies to predict and diagnosis myocardial infarction. Data sources include electronic health record, epidemiological studies, and focused clinical cohorts. Most projects will include identifying high-yield, tractable goals; capturing data; data exploration; method development; analysis; implementation; and dissemination. We aim to first apply best-in-class existing methods and then to develop novel analytical approaches.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in computer science, statistics, biology, or related field.
- Experience in Python or R programming language desirable
- Experience with machine learning and statistical modeling desirable
- Experience with databases and SQL a plus
- Experience with linux and high-performance computing a plus
- Experience with clinical or biomedical data a plus
- Ability to work with a software development team using formal software development methods
- Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members
