Hello,

I applied for a research project in a computational biology lab, the professor has sorted their publications by subject in lab website; for example

gene expression data analysis (RNA-seq, microarray, software development)

genomic analysis

protein analysis; etc and each field with different researches

he asked me to email him what I am more interested. I only know I like dry lab ones, I liked a search in genomic analysis related to evolutionary genomics, I like to use publicly available data,...

If you were me how explain what you interested not with a disappointing manner rather convincing

Thank you

I liked a search in genomic analysis related to evolutionary genomics

So this is the first thing you like genomic analysis ; and all the above tools is just tools to help in genomic analysis , let us change the question to what you can do more work in RNA-seq or microaaray or software development and/or protein analysis? based on the answer you can say:

I would like to use ........... (your answer here) to do genomic analysis related to evolution

after that you need to ask your self what topic in evolution you wanna study?

so the last answer will be:

I would like to use ......... (the tool) to study .......... (the evolution genomic topic)

thank you so much,

actually I am not specific enough yet, therefore I should write; I would like to use publicaly available data to conduct genomic analysis related to evolution (but I don not do have spesific question in evolution yet)

so now you have the first part that you will use public data (what kind of public data? or you will use different kinds like RNA-seq and WGS etc ...).

second part is :
to answer what question in evolution?

So your homework to find an interesting question for you (which not easy task)

This may turn out to be a "trick" question. Perhaps you have some feeling about that possibility based on the correspondence you have had with this person.

On one hand the PI may really be looking for a completely truthful answer. Once you provide it may suggest that while my lab does not do that would you like to work on one of these things that we do in my lab. On other hand, they may decide that your interests don't align with their lab and you would not be a good fit.

The other possibility is that they want you to show an interest in things that are being done in that lab so (s)he can consider you for a possible opening.

Just saying that you will use public data for a project is not good enough.
