Forum:immediate help needed for genome sequence analysis of bacteria

I have assembled and annotated a bacterial genome from a paired end sequence read library, following instructions from different web pages or textbooks using free packages and software. I have been all alone in this with no supervision and have lots of questions.

currently I'm a toddler's mother and student with no time or fund to travel anywhere and participate in any training course, yet motivated to learn.

looking for some experienced colleague in the field who can possibly put time in some kind of web communication to teach me, answer my questions and help me check the correctness of technical steps I have performed to analyse my reads.

an affordable pay may be applicable.

I have assembled and annotated a bacterial genome

That means all the work is now done?

If you just need advice on correctness of technical steps followed then edit your post and add that information.

Hi, I am a bit puzzled by this request:

looking for some experienced colleague(s) in the field who can possibly put time in some kind of web communication to teach me, answer my questions and help me check the correctness of technical steps I have performed to analyse my reads.

This is exactly what this site is for, and you should not have to pay for that. I have removed your email address as to our policy not to foster off-the board discussions.

Dear Michael of course biostar is of great help with answering related questions but what I am looking for, is an experienced fellow to check my data with. there is a situation in working alone, when you have done whatever seemed reasonable to you and you came to "mission complete" session and have no clear question but its just all around your head! I want someone to put in time, view my data and what I concluded from them and tell me if I am fine!

Would it not be better to do this by collaborating with a colleague that you know/trust instead of asking people on a forum?

Time commitment needed for this would not be insignificant and there will have to be mutual understanding of how to share credit etc.

If you just need your technical work checked for sanity then you should post those steps in the original question.

I think we could discuss if we like and should support some sort of

  • bioinformatics online study groups
  • online mentoring
  • the 'personal trainer approach' described here

sure it is better in local but unfortunately I don't have it! there would be a long long conversation if I want to explain why and how, lets just say not all of us are studying at nice and pretty institutes ;-)

Specific well-described questions with all required information usually get quick answer, if you are not doing something too exotic ;-)

Hi, what you are describing sound like either a task to discuss with your supervisor or with a local student group/pairing. Possibly something like this -a student group- could be or has been also established online, I will not take this into doubt. However, there is one point I would like to make: This board can rarely make up for lack of supervision.

I would like to encourage you to talk to your university/institution or student body and organize! As a student, you are entitled to good supervision and you should claim it. You should also be encouraged to take action for forming a local student group.

Otherwise, we will answer concrete question posted here like we always do.

Note: I also changed this to Forum because it is not a bioinformatics question. There is some background given, but no question really?

It will become a question once OP adds the details that she wants advice on/checked.

It's closer to a job offer, currently.
