EMBL-ABR (European Molecular Biology Laboratory Australia Bioinformatics Resource) is running a survey on the use of different standards across the data lifecycle in Australian biosciences in order to direct future efforts.

Some of the questions in the survey are quite ambiguous. Particularly Q3. "Which standards do you use for your data and for which purpose?"
I'm not sure I understand what is meant by "standard" in this context. Does it refer to:
1) A benchmark? (e.g. gold standard)
2) A control? (e.g. normalisation across experiments)
3) A standardised data structure?
In this case, 'standard' stands for an agreed upon norm around data - something like a controlled ontology (TO, GO), or even file formats (hdf5, fastq. fasta etc.)
