Has someone any experience with hmmvar and hmmvar-func?

I would like to use hmmvar-func for a project, but can't find anyone who has used it before. Additionally I have some problems running the algorithm. That is why I wanted to ask if someone has any experience with the tool and whether it does a good job, at all.

I am also having some issues with this algorithm, did you figure out how to use it? it seems to eat a lot of RAM, possibly caused by a bug... the author is not answering to issues in Github and I guess the project is abandoned...
