Bioinformatician for oncology biomarker analyses

Department: Oncology Biomarker Development (OBD)

Location: Basel, Switzerland

Starting time: as soon as possible

Job Purpose:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Oncology Biomarker Development (OBD) department to collaborate with biomarker scientists in data analytics.

The bioinformatician will work on multiple oncology studies and projects and provide the necessary bioinformatics and biostatistics skillset for effective biomarker analyses, including ensuring quality of data, and leading bioinformatics and biostatistics analyses and visualization.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Your activity includes the bioinformatics and statistical analysis of biomarker data from clinical trials and other research projects in collaboration with oncology biomarker scientists
  • You will be supporting the writing of statistical analysis plans, and co-leading the analysis and interpretation of data together with biomarker scientists
  • You apply and modify bioinformatics methods for biomarker analyses using innovative molecular and computational technologies
  • You analyze large molecular datasets such as genomic sequence data, or proteomics data for clinical research
  • You ensure the quality of acquired data and their validation and apply advanced statistical methods to determine and mitigate sources of bias and noise in complex datasets
  • You document analytical methods used in individual studies
  • Collaborate with other bioinformatics scientists and biostatistics to deliver best-in-class solutions and analytics
  • Utilize best practices in bioinformatics and biostatistics: design & planning of analyses, testing, code reviews, collaborative version control etc.

Professional and Technical Requirements:

  • A master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required. Relevant fields of studies and work: bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, statistics, systems biology, genetics, genomics or related life science field with significant quantitative research experience
  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field is highly beneficial

Experience, Skills, Knowledge

  • Strong proficiency in R and other high-level programming languages, and experience in standard bioinformatics toolkits and programs are required
  • Applicants with good understanding of concepts in cancer biology/genomics/immunology and/or familiarity with high-throughput sequencing and/or expression technologies will be prioritized
  • Ability to learn and use new statistical methodology and excellent analytical skills
  • Demonstrated skills and expertise in theoretical and/or applied biostatistics/bioinformatics, such as probability theory, statistical genetics, modeling using likelihood and Bayesian methods, hypothesis testing, and experimental design
  • Enjoy working in an international team environment and collaborating with other bioinformatics scientists, and biomarker scientists
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and to work well in a matrix environment
  • Passionate about applying your skills to advance personalized medicine and help patients
  • Proven ability to work successfully under pressure
  • Proven planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • English: fluency in speaking and writing is a must
