How to convert gene symbol to ncbi UID

I have a few thousand gene symbols like ("SS1G_01843", "SS1G_01843", "SS1G_07146", "SS1G_00829") and I want to convert them to NCBI gi IDs (UID). I have tried rentrez package in R but could not find any option for this conversion. Can someone please suggest something?
