Position for a postdoctoral/senior researcher is available in the Computational Biomedicine group at the Bioinformatics Unit, Turku Centre for Biotechnology for a period 1.1.2018-31.12.2020. The starting date is negotiable.

Description of recruiting organization

Turku Centre for Biotechnology (www.btk.fi) is a joint department of University of Turku (www.utu.fi) and Åbo Akademi University, providing high-end technologies and expertise to academic and industrial researchers and a stimulating multidisciplinary and international research environment.

The Bioinformatics Unit and the Computational Biomedicine Group of Dr. Laura Elo (www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/elo) develops computational data analysis tools and mathematical models for biomedical research. The eventual goal is to improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of complex diseases, such as diabetes and cancer. A specific focus is on analysing and interpreting data generated by modern high-throughput biotechnologies, such as next-generation sequencing and mass-spectrometry proteomics.

Description of the position to fill

The position is available in the Academy of Finland project of Dr. Elo, as part of a consortium on Immunoregulation and Therapeutic Precision in Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Health from Science (TERVA) Academy Programme. The consortium is a multidisciplinary combination of highly competitive groups, covering immunology, genetics, clinical and molecular medicine, and computational biology. Cutting-edge laboratory technologies will be used from single-cell sequencing to whole genome approaches together with a wide range of existing and novel bioinformatics tools and unique patient sample collections to understand the disease mechanisms and to enable more individualised treatment of the disease in the future.

The postdoctoral/senior researcher will work in a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, biology and medicine, ensuring that there are competent additional personnel to assist in the projects as needed. He/She will also be tightly connected with the national and international collaborators, including a close connection to clinical and experimental teams. The postdoctoral/senior researcher has the opportunity to target the research according to his/her own research interests within the project and to lead a small team within the Bioinformatics Unit.

The salary is in accordance with the universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5-6 where the work specific salary component is 2865.30-3340.77€/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on personal performance, which is at most 46.3% of the base salary. There is a trial period of four months.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with expertise in bioinformatics, biostatistics, machine learning, single cells, genomics and/or epigenomics. We will consider candidates with outstanding potential and established excellence in research, proven by scientific publications in high impact international journals. Particular attention is paid also to success in research funding applications. The candidates should hold a PhD degree. An optimal candidate has international research experience and experience in supervision of students. Good communication skills in English, both oral and written, are essential. Experience with R, Matlab or other mathematical software is required.

Application

The applications should be submitted at the latest on 2.1.2018 using the electronic system. The application should include a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, contact information for 3 referees, and copies of relevant degree certificates. A link to the electronic application system can be found at www.utu.fi/careers. For further information please contact Mirkka Ruotsalainen, bioinformatics-coordinator@utu.fi or +358 (0)29 450 3796.
