Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Bioinformatics
Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties Full Time Fixed Term, Grade 7 £36613 -£38833 or Grade 8 £39992 – £47722 Placement on scale dependent on experience and length of contract
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Bioinformatician to contribute to a group of researchers studying the molecular genetic mechanisms leading to atopic eczema; the post will be hosted jointly in the laboratory of Prof Sara Brown at the School of Medicine and Prof Geoff Barton at the School of Life Sciences.
This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled bioinformatician/computational biologist or scientist with strong data analysis skills to play a significant part in a £1.8 million Wellcome Trust-funded project. The work combines cutting-edge technology in molecular genetics and cell biology with bioinformatic analysis to answer fundamental questions about the mechanisms leading to skin inflammation and atopic eczema.
The successful applicant will, depending on their experience and interests: • Interrogate an NGS dataset of ultra deep sequencing and develop analytical techniques to investigate copy number variation within genes of the epidermal differentiation complex • Provide more basic statistical support for follow-up • Analyse proteomic data arising from organotypic skin culture models • Analyse RNAseq, ATACseq and ChIPseq data for chromatin conformational studies in primary keratinocytes under different experimental stimuli • Apply statistical genetic expertise to investigate gene-environment interactions in population datasets
Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications Essential • PhD in Bioinformatics; or strong data analysis skills gained in other fields, e.g. physics • Extensive research experience of programming/data analysis/development • Skills in at least one of: R, Python, Perl, Java, C/C++ in a Unix/Linux environment and the ability to learn new programming skills as required • Knowledge of statistical analysis of relevance to biological research & large datasets. • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also operating as part of a team, providing direction and guidance as required • Demonstration of initiative and ability to conceive, design and execute appropriate experimental analyses and draw conclusions from the outcomes • Excellent presentation skills • Flexibility and willingness to work outwith regular hours if required • For appointment to grade 8: o Extensive relevant postdoctoral experience o Experience of identifying or securing grant funding (independently or as part of a team) o Experience of mentoring, coaching and development of colleagues o Experience and confidence in presenting research findings at national and international meetings
Desirable • Familiarity with molecular biology/structural biology concepts and principles • Evidence of interest in clinical/translational research • Sound knowledge of standard bioinformatics tools, algorithms and techniques • Knowledge of bioinformatics techniques commonly applied in high-throughput sequencing • Major contribution to at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal
