Postdoctoral position in bioinformatics with applications to antibiotic resistance
Job description We have an open position for a motivated, self-driven post-doctoral researcher in bioinformatics. The position will be focused on DNA-based analysis of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. This includes the development of novel bioinformatical methods for interpretation of optical DNA mapping data with the aim to implement ultra-rapid methods in clinical diagnostics. Another area of focus will be detection of novel forms of antibiotic resistance genes by screening of genomic and metagenomic data. The research will be done in close collaboration with researchers from clinical microbiology and the environmental sciences within the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (http://care.gu.se).
The position is for 24 months and located in Erik Kristiansson's research group at the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The research group is focused on bioinformatical and statistical analysis of high-dimensional data with applications in the life sciences. The research group has a strong interdisciplinary profile and is actively collaborating with experimental groups within infectious diseases, molecular diagnostics, environmental sciences, ecology and cancer genomics. The analysis of optical DNA mapping data will be done in close collaboration with Fredrik Westerlund's research group at Biology and Biological engineering at Chalmers. Westerlund's research is focused on the use of nanofluidic devices to study biomolecules in general and DNA in particular. Projects range from fundamental biophysics of DNA-protein interactions to analysis of clinical DNA, for example regarding antibiotic resistance.
The post-doctoral position offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research. As a post-doctoral researcher, you are expected to work independently and to be able to supervise/co-supervise Master's and PhD students. Teaching of undergraduate students may also be included to a small extent.
Position summary Full-time temporary employment.The employment is limited to a maximum of 2 years.
Qualifications The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant area, such as bioinformatics, molecular biology, computational sciences, mathematics, mathematical statistics or physics. The applicant should also be experienced in programming and used to work with bioinformatical tools, preferably in the Linux/UNIX computer environment. Previous experience with bioinformatical software used for the analysis of data from next generation sequencing ('NGS') is meritorious. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
