Machine learning is a broad term and hence the question you posted cannot be answered concisely. There are 100's of machine learning algorithms / techniques which are applied to biological problems when the problem in hand could be translated into say a statistical model or an optimization problem or a classification or clustering problem. Classifying DNA is just one of the many areas where machine learning works. I suggest you read and learn more about it.
