Hello all,

I'm thinking of doing Bioinformatics Master and I'm anxious about the life after the master .Will it be easy to find a job ?

I'm going to Europe for the Master .It will cost me like 30,000 USD to do the master ,so it's not cheap and I don't want to risk that amount of money in vain .

Thanks .

As an experimental biologist who picked up some bioinformatics skills, I can tell you for certain it has made be more employable. I can't see any reason why this trend wouldnt at least stay the same for the next couple of years. In all likelihood, it'll increase as sequencing and big data get more and more widespread/cheaper.

As buzzword-y as it is, picking up some AI/ML skills wouldn't hurt at all.

Look at it this way. Will there be jobs that require bioinformatics skills in 2020? Absolutely. It would be up to you to make sure you are ready to grab one of those jobs then. Finding the right job is never easy.

Since you are paying out of your pocket to get these skills, keep reminding yourself about it every day until 2020.

here's some (though 2015) estimates on available data in 2025:

Stephens et al. estimated the available genome data to match the amount of video material on Youtube bey 2025, Erika Check Hayden summarized this on Nature News at that time.

Based on this, and my observation that sequencing is applied in more and more research fields, institutes, routine applications and at companies, I'm fairly confident, you'll be able to get a job with a decent skill set.

As big data science is evolving you may want to make sure that you acquire the skills that will help you keep up: learning how to learn by yourself, good math foundations and programming skills are a good start. There are plenty of other areas in biology besides bioinformatics where computational approaches are required. For example, new light microscopy technologies are generating TB-scale data sets and genome-editing and labelling techniques make genomics data of use in new areas.
Finally, depending on where you're from, you may want to consider if a master from a European university is really worth this amount of money compared to what's available near you, especially if you need to take a loan for this. What I mean is that the premium on salary given by a EU degree may not be worth this much money.

No Job prospect after doing a Masters in Bioinformatics, it also depends on your primary degree. I have completed a Masters in Bioinformatics with a grade of 9.9/10 (I was first of my class..). Looking for job in the field for 1 year , but there is no interest now for bioinformatics in industry, so everyone rejects me as not a good candidate for those kinds of roles (my primary degree is dentistry..). Maybe you would be more employable with a PhD or Post-doc... but you are not going anywhere just with a Masters. I think others who have answered this post are over-optimistic... My experience as a Masters graduate (with distinction) is there are no jobs in this field, and I honestly communicate it for others to know.
