Hi everyone,
I am an undergraduate student of bioinformatics in Germany and I want to pursue an academic career in genomics or bioinformatics/computational biology but I am afraid that I wont get a job if I stay in Germany. Where should I do my master and what else should I do in order to make a great academic career?
I wouldn't be afraid of that. If you aim for a career in the US it might be easier to already go abroad for your Masters (if you can afford that), as you can already get some contacts there which might make it easier further down the road.
You should be lucky, be coincidentally at the right time and the right place. Be diplomatic and social, extend your network.
To add to this everyone makes their own LUCK.
Be busy, take on work that's not necessarily your job, improve an already "finished" tasks, question your own approaches, assist others, create etc
each one of these acts gives you new opportunities to "get lucky"
as WouterDeCoster states
I love this statement - generally important in life - but specifically in bioinformatics as a field
