We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated data processing engineer to join Ludwig Cancer Research, Oxford Branch. This position is full-time on a fixed-term contract for 3 years in the first instance.

You will have a degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biology, or equivalent. Experience of working at the interface between experimental researchers, data scientists and the sequencing, imaging and mass-spectrometry facilities. It is therefore essential that you can communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff, both in writing and in person. Together with our computational biologists, you will design and implement an automated pipeline to take raw data and turn them into analysis-ready files that can be passed on to scientists. This will require proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g. python/ruby/perl) and unix command line tools, and the ability to write maintainable, reusable and efficient software. Familiarity with commonly used sequencing-data processing applications, such as samtools, bwa, Picard, GATK etc would be highly beneficial, as well as experience with job scheduling systems like SGE.

Preventing data loss and facilitating the dissemination of results with the scientific community is critical for the Institute. Part of the responsibility of this role will be to help manage the documentation and long-term storage of primary sequencing data. In collaboration with the Research Data Officer, you will ensure that the data that enter the processing pipeline are adequately annotated, so that primary data files can be correctly archived, both in-house and on public repositories such as EGA, GEO or SRA.

The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Oxford is a research centre that aims to uncover the molecular causes of cancer and turn this knowledge into better treatments. High-throughput experiments, such as next-generation sequencing, have become an indispensable tool for our research. We are now seeking an enthusiastic and motivated data processing engineer who will help us build systems to manage the hundreds of gigabytes of data that our researchers produce every year.

New and improved tools and methods are being released regularly. Keeping informed of new technological developments, and updating our processes to remain state-of-the-art, will be an important part of the job. This might also involve some travelling to attend conferences or courses.

If you are not afraid to take on responsibility, are keen to work in a diverse and multi-disciplinary team, and want to contribute directly to our efforts to beat cancer, then you should apply now. As a family friendly department we are happy to consider requests for flexible working patterns.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online, and as part of the application you will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement.

Only applications received before 12.00 noon on 21 June 2019 will be considered.
