I am learning how to assemble genomes using bwa. I would like to assemble only one chromosome. In the browser of 1000 genomes I found only the bam of chromosome 11 and 22. I would like to get the fastq, is this possible? do i need to convert bam to fastq? how do I do?

assemble genomes using bwa

Bwa is an aligner and not an assembler. Is alignment/mapping reads to a reference genome what you want to do?

What have you tried yourself already? Did you search google for example how to convert BAM to fastq? I can find a lot when I google that. Did you read 1000 genomes about how to download data there?

Are you sure you are looking at the correct folder in 1000G? sounds like you are looking at some example folder.
