A call is open for a Postdoctoral Fellowship (BPD) for PhD holder under the R&D Unit with reference ‘Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência UID/Multi/04555’ at the IGC - Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal, funded by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), as follows:

Admission: Requisites:

PhD in Biology, Genetics or Bioinformatics is mandatory.

We are looking for a highly motivated person, passionate by science and technology, eager to learn and to solve problems, with personal competences to work in a service-based environment, with good inter-personal skills and high degree of initiative.

Additionally, we will prefer candidates with:

  1. The candidate should have a solid experience in Bioinformatics and a strong background in bio-statistics.
  2. The candidate should be experienced in working with scripting languages such as Perl, R and Python.
  3. Experience with using Linux environments is essential
  4. Knowledge of other programming language, e.g. C++ and Java is a plus.
  5. Skill of website scripting (e.g. PHP or Java script) will be valued.
  6. Capacity to work both independently and as a part of a team are required.
  7. Good communication skills, including a good level of spoken English, which would enable a good communication and work in an international setting, are necessary.
  8. High commitment and a collaborative attitude are needed for this job.
  9. Troubleshooting capacity and attention to detail are extremely important.

Work plan:

The selected candidate will join the Bioinformatics Facility in IGC. The activities are:

  1. Service-based bioinformatical analysis for IGC research groups.
  2. Provide assistance to researchers regarding experimental design and data visualization.
  3. Providing data analysis service for collaborating Universities, research institutes and hospitals.
  4. Training of the wet-lab scientists in IGC for data submission, basic analysis and data display.
  5. Participation in activities directed to external people, such as courses, visits to the Facility or bioinformatics-related demonstrations
  6. Development of new pipelines or software solutions to answer users’ needs
  7. Develop easy-to-use Website based interface for data submission and analysis

Legislation and Applicable Regulation: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, Research Fellowship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology I.P. in force; and the Research Fellowship Regulations from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), Oeiras, Portugal.

Working place: The work will be developed at IGC (Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal), in the Bioinformatics group under the scientific supervision of Dr. Jingtao Lilue.

Fellowship Duration: The postdoctoral fellowship will have an annual duration renewable up to a maximum of 6 years in agreement with the project-allocated budget for human resources.

Monthly Allowance: The present fellowship corresponds to € 1.509,80 + Social Security, according to the Portuguese guidelines directly defined by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P) (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt) and the Research Fellowship Regulations from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), Oeiras, Portugal. Payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection Methods:

Candidates will be short-listed for an interview based on their CV (40%), reference letters (10%) and motivation letter (10%). Candidates with adequate profile will be interviewed (40%), and when relevant asked to demonstrate any stated competence. The final results will be expressed in a scale of 0-100 considering these four components.

The selection criteria will be application evaluation (50%) and interview (50%). A pre-selection for interview will be dependent on the fulfilment of the mandatory criteria (20%), and in such case, assessment of the preferential (20%) and presentation letter (10%). 2 candidates with higher score will be selected for interview. After interview, the deliberation is made through nominal voting of the Jury according to the eligibility and selection procedures. Candidates that do not fulfil the mandatory criteria will not be considered for interview and application effects.

Announcement and Communication of Results: The assessment results will be sent to all candidates by email and to FCT by registered surface mail.
