We've downloaded the annual baseline PubMed data and are in the process of installing BaseX to serve the XML files but I was wondering how the NIH do it - what type of server database do they use?
Surprisingly little information is available about the compute infrastructure that is used to support NCBI. If you use twitter you could tweet at NCBI's twitter account and ask.
