Dear biostars community,

I'm a first-year PhD student, Had my master degree in bioinformatics, and wishing to continue in the same field in my research.

I'm having a hard time to find supervisors in computational biology, my current supervisor is purely a mathematician and computer sciences expert. We came to the conclusion that we need extern expertise to provide us with deep insight into thematics we can study.

Please add some details about the project and the skill set you can contribute to a collaboration. What are you working on, is this a new or an ongoing project, what are the contributors, and what kind of skillset should the collaborator bring into the project. Make the collaboration attractive. A random post without details for sure does not suffice for this.

Without that I do not see how any serious professional would even consider replying to such a post, and I am saying this in your best interest with 0% intend to be offensive.

Thank you for the advice, you are totally right. We're trying to create a project based on the collaboration. what we can offer is mathematical modeling, statistical analysis and solid knowledge in software development. what we need is a biological problem with provided data.

However, people need to understand exactly what you/your lab did before, maybe share your GitHub?! or anything that shows your programming ability, and what tools/software you did before, also share research papers from your lab, which will give others chances to see how can they establish cooperation. ~Best,

I don't think you need a collaborator as long as you are willing to work a bit in finding your own project. There is a huge amount of biological information out there if you wish to analyze it. For example, you can work on method development or improvement and learn biology along the way. It is only a matter of picking the type of data you are most comfortable with, be it biological sequences, structures, images, or measurements of biological processes such as transcription (RNAseq). In such a case you would have a complete choice of the model system and data types, as opposed to getting the random data from random collaborators, and with biological systems where you have no expertise or interest.

Thank you for your answer. As a start, I don't want to dive blindly into analyzing data. I want a biological problem that needs solving. thus the need for a well-informed biologist/computational biologist. I'm a beginner in the field so I'm not looking to answer the "what" and "why" questions I'm only willing to answer "how" you can call it a kick start to research
