In the old version of Biostar you could use html in your post. I used the <BR> tag if I wanted a next line without an open space. Now, when you use <BR> in your post, in the preview it shows a new line, but in the actual post it shows. Same for <P>: </P>. Didn't try any other html tags but think that it's the same.
HTML is currently not permitted - the tags are escaped with [?] to indicate content that is not allowed. Properly sanitizing and integrating it with the other two supported markups markdown and ReST is not yet solved.
That being said it I do agree that the preview operating on slightly different principles leads to confusion. The final post rendering is I implemented in Python and takes place after post submission whereas the preview runs in the client as javascript and does not render REST either.
