altLabs is excited to announce the launch of our new data science competition Genetic Engineering Attribution Challenge! We’re awarding $60,000 in prizes for improved and inventive solutions to a crucial problem in genetic engineering: where was this engineered?

Identifying the designer of genetically engineered DNA is a crucial capability for the maturation of genetic engineering as a field, with important applications in academia, industry, and forensics. By connecting a genetically engineered system with its designers, we can promote responsible innovation in synthetic biology – without stifling innovation. In this competition, we challenge you to join us in advancing the state of the art.

Teams will compete to predict the labs-of-origin for a dataset of engineered sequences. Prizes will go to the teams who achieve the highest prediction accuracy, and to those who best demonstrate creative applications of their approach to real-world attribution problems.

We’re searching for creative and original solutions from across fields, and are especially excited to see collaborations across disciplines. Whether your background is in bioinformatics, data science, or something else, we’re calling on you to compete!

The first stage of the competition is now live, with submissions due by October 19th at 23:59 UTC. To learn more, find a team, and get involved, click here!
