Kaleido Biosciences is a clinical-stage healthcare company with a differentiated, chemistry-driven approach to leveraging the potential of the microbiome organ to treat disease and improve human health. The Company’s Microbiome Metabolic Therapies (MMT™) are designed to modulate the metabolic output and profile of the microbiome by driving the function and distribution of the organ’s existing microbes. Kaleido is advancing a broad pipeline of MMT candidates to address a variety of diseases and conditions with significant unmet patient needs. The Company’s human-centric discovery and development offers the potential to be faster and more cost-efficient than traditional drug development. We also have an exceptional team that is committed to scientific innovation, transforming lives and building a strong culture.

Overview:

Kaleido is seeking an experienced, motivated, and creative Computational Scientist to build and lead a growing team responsible for developing and applying computational methods to complex microbiome, metabolic, immunological, and chemical data across each phase of Research & Development. The work specifically focusses on using synthetic glycans (MMT™) to modulate microbiome composition and metabolic output for the prevention and treatment of disease. Taking this role comes at a time where Kaleido is rapidly moving into new immune-driven indication areas such as immuno-oncology, inflammatory, and auto-immune disease. Consequently, the Integrated Data Science (IDS) team is expanding beyond its core strength in the computational analysis of microbiome compositional data to linking chemical-structures to activity read-outs, metabolite profiles and host biomarkers. The candidate should be a proven leader and mentor that recruits and retains top talent, who can influence stakeholders via his/her scientific and technical knowledge, novel approaches and strategic thinking. The Director/Sr. Director of IDS will inspire the scientific direction, be a champion for innovation and is ready to challenge the status-quo to deliver on the strategy for existing and new programs. The candidate must enjoy a fast-paced and hands-on research environment.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to create and articulate a compelling long-term vision and implement and execute an aligned strategy that will ensure high quality outcomes
  • Develop a broad computational and data platform that integrates microbiome sequencing, metabolite, chemical and clinical data
  • Provide scientific leadership to IDS team; lead efforts to create novel tools and to establish routine computational and data sciences practices to screening, compound characterization, preclinical and clinical studies
  • Work with other expertise teams and the executive leadership team to develop/adjust the Kaleido’s strategy and operational plans that will be key to the company’s success
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Biology team, providing scientific oversight and direction, and ensuring effective project progression
  • Retain and recruit top talent, mentor the team with emphasis on people development, leadership, and culture
  • Work with other expertise teams to align and prioritize software engineering, pipeline standardization, and data visualization capabilities as key accelerators for our innovation pipeline
  • Serve as a member of research leadership team along with leaders of Chemistry, Biology, and Clinical translational studies, to set strategy, manage resources, and oversee personnel decisions across research
  • Work closely with project leads, chemistry, computational biology, clinicians, and translational medicine to ensure smooth and effective transitions of project assets into the clinic
  • Support and execution of R&D programs in business development partnerships
  • Drive and support IP development of Kaleido Intellectual Property portfolio

Qualifications:

  • A proven scientific leader with 10+ years of industry experience in developing and applying computational methods to novel problems across each phase of R&D, in particular in relation to microbiome and immunology data sets
  • PhD in data science, computational biology, applied math or related fields
  • Clear and proven leadership skills and capabilities to work within a matrix organization
  • Track record in leading, managing and mentoring diverse research teams towards the goals of the department and the career aspirations of individuals
  • Capability to balance priorities of a broad portfolio of project activities based on scientific and resource criteria.
  • Ability to represent the computational biology team and expertise area both internally and externally with both the scientific and business communities
  • Familiarity with a broad range of therapeutic expertise is desired
  • Outstanding teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills with proficiency in networking, developing relationships and establishing credibility with key senior stakeholders
  • A track record of leading innovation, scientific creativity coupled with strong analytical skills
