I need to archive some GenomeStudio (2.0) projects. Is it possible to just zip up a folder and save it somewhere? Or does GS retain stateful information somewhere else, in which case simply unzipping an archived project and trying to open it in GS won't work?

While someone may answer you may want to email Illumina tech support and ask. Post their answer here once you hear back from them.

Reply from Illumina:

You should just be able to move a genome studio project around in a tarball like you want. There was something I recall with a full path to files if you still had the IDATs linked up but it’s unlikely to become an issue unless you try to rebuild the project.

I can recommend Commander One. It's a very cool tool and also easy to use. You can read this article and get to know more.
