Hello Everyone,
Based on discussions in this thread: Job Postings, we added a new category called Jobs. To create a post of this type select the Job from the Post Type drop-down menu.
Only bioinformatics or computational genomics related postings are permitted. You may repost jobs from other sources as long as the originating source permits this action.
Moderators will monitor the content of this section and we will come up with more rules based on user feedback/opinions.
For example a possible guideline would be that posts older than three months to be closed.
So I'd suggest based on the first listing that we create a sticky on top with info on jobs sites that we've found useful.
Perhaps insist that a post in the jobs section is for a specific, outlined job that is currently available.
Should job seekers also be allowed to post?
I would vote against that. The first reason being that I believe there are (unfortunately) much more job seekers than job offers, so the flooding could be threatening us. Secondly, I would be afraid of short job seeking posts with very little information, again the flooding threat.
On the other hand, choosing that the 'Jobs' section is only populated by job offers, centers the concept of 'working in a lab' more around the job provider than around the worker's expectations, which I find a pitty in research.
Good question, not sure the right answer is. As Leonor mentions one danger is that we might just end up hosting a bunch of resumes and that would not be useful for anyone, on the other hand I would be for having people offer consulting services for data analysis.
I would prefer to say no to people that are looking to get hired but yes for people offering data analysis services (and have some sort of credentials, website, publications etc)
One solution might be to create a section in the user profiles for that kind of thing. Like employment status, services offered or similar rather than creating a whole new section in the site. It would be searchable, and extend the usefulness of profiles, where users can stick up links to commercial offerings like you suggest.
