We are seeking a business process analyst to monitor and improve the data processing pipeline for ClinVar, a freely accessible product of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). ClinVar is the world's database for genetic variants and interpretations of their relationship to human health and disease https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/clinvar/. Clinical genetic testing laboratories and researchers worldwide share their data about genetic variants through ClinVar so that interpretations of variants, methods of interpretation, and evidence can be compared and improved, with the goal of improving patient care. The ClinVar team processes the submitted data and makes it available to a global scientific community via web display, FTP downloads, and API retrieval. Processing involves several manual and automated steps in an internal submission pipeline. ClinVar has an imperative to reduce the submissions turn-around time and publish data faster.
The business process analyst will monitor and improve ClinVar's submission processing pipeline. This individual will report to the product owner and work closely with the product manager and with the curation, technical, and analytics teams. This position involves analyzing the submission processing pipeline and related data and establishing and using analytics and dashboards. This individual will then make recommendations for continuous improvement of the quality, productivity, policy, and efficiency of the business process. The business process analyst will also be responsible for monitoring day-to-day data operations of the pipeline to identify roadblocks and high-value improvements to curator SOPs and automated processes. On a daily basis, this individual will monitor the submissions backlog and Kanban board, review operational alerts, open tickets for development, and triage with appropriate parties for high-priority issues requiring same-day resolution. In addition, this individual will manage weekly and longer-term analyses to continuously improve the productivity of submissions processing.
This is a full-time position working on site at NCBI, NIH, in Bethesda, Maryland, but the new hire will initially telework. Currently, all Computercraft employees at NIH are teleworking full time to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Employees will return to onsite work as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

Required Skills
- 5+ years of experience running operations in a large and complex environment, preferably in data operations
- Experience with Six Sigma methods for process improvement in an operational setting to achieve specific goals
- Experience using performance metrics to reach specific goals
- Ability to troubleshoot an operational pipeline to identify highest priority problems and identify solutions
- Extensive skills in analysis and reporting results to stakeholders at different levels
- Experience with business intelligence, analytics, and data visualization tools, such as Google Analytics and Tableau
- Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, with team members of diverse backgrounds (e.g., technical, subject matter experts)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with an emphasis on initiative and follow-through
- Experience with Agile processes, especially scrum
Desired Skills
- Work experience in genetics, especially molecular and/or clinical genetics
- Work experience with production-level bioinformatics databases and pipelines
- Familiarity with Jira and Confluence
- Familiarity with technical environments, complex databases, and process flows
