Hello I tried to download a "Series Matrix" from GEO with a manual download, but unfortunately it seems that they changed something on their site , nothing is downloaded and a tab is opening with the following content "ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/series/GSE138nnn/GSE138206/matrix/"

No download nothing.... I have a chrome browser and I checked on "settings" the "downloads" section , and everything is fine there... what is happening?

Must be something local at your end. I can see a file GSE138206_series_matrix.txt.gz at your link and can download it with Firefox.

As noted by @ATPoint below it appears that chrome now requires you to use a local application for plain FTP downloads.

ATpoint thank you for your answer, that is indeed what is happening... Obviously this is not a "local" problem as before i ask the question i uninstalled and reinstalled the whole chrome browser and also I restarted my computer... I cannot find a chrome extension for this... I would not recommend anyone this FileZilla, it's not easy to use ... and nobody wants to read the whole "tutorial" it has... Google chrome , has indeed stopped supporting FTP files , this is the GEO's way of downloading manually files...

I would recommend anyone having the same problem from now and on to use "Mozzila firefox " which still supports GEO's expression matrices. Thank you for your help.

You copy/paste the address into the FileZilla address field on the topleft and press enter, that's it. Not difficult at all.

You can still use any FTP supporting commandline tool, of which there are countless, its just one browser which has changed its behaviour.

It is a ftp server that you are trying to access

ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/series/GSE138nnn/GSE138206/matrix/

Chrome does not natively support ftp (anymore?). On Mac you should get a popup asking whether to open Finder, you can then connect as Guest. Not sure how it looks on Windows/Linux. There are extensions for Chrome afaik, or any standalone ftp clients such as FileZilla.

Chrome still supports FTP, but it needs to be enabled - see here.

Hello ,

I have contacted NCBI , and they told me that there is indeed a bug in their system and they are looking to fix this issue soon.

Thank you all.
