Hi, I am trying to reclaim some of the good features from SE. In the first version, we had an automatic "question bump demon", that would randomly put old questions at the top of the stack. This served the purpose of making old questions more visible. I therefore propose to have such a demon with the following extended functionality, such that

  • Questions are picked randomly from the question pool and put at the top
  • Random picking frequency should be adjustable, default 1-3 Q per day
  • Random picking should occur more frequently for questions in that order: without an answer, without accepted answer, any Q
  • In addition: question that are referenced, e.g. by duplicates should appear at the top of the stack immediately

Sure, we can do that easily.

Points one through three are easy to do, all it needs a factor of how many times more likely is an unanswered question be more visible: 2? The fourth about duplicates is a little more complicated as currently we have no unique way to mark that.

I want to also note that the listings for the most recent votes also has a similar effect,- at least on my usecases - I always seem to find high quality content there.

Finally due to the way the site works the bump could be associated with user 1 (Biostar Community) or the original user.

EDIT:

We now have a bump feature that runs every six hours and selects a question to be placed on the top, the question will be tagged as being changed by the user "Biostar Community" There is about 30% bias towards unanswered questions.

Maybe there should be a 'mark as duplicate' button for the mods that pops up an input box where we can input the original duplicated post address. These clusters of duplicated posts marked by mods might potentially serve as a good training set for similar question suggestions when users post a new question.

Alas this would probably require a schema change in the database and those decisions are harder to make because they could affect the entire operation of the system
