Does Running Velvet With Gzipped Files Reduce Memory Usage?

Velvet accepts gzipped files (fastq.qz). Would using compressed files reduce the memory-demand of velvet, or is it simply to reduce storage file size?

Velvet has to decompress the file to read it so I would expect the memory usage to be the same as uncompressed input
