Off topic:Extract 2 Million Seqeuces From Fasta File

Hi, there. My problem is that i have to extract roughly 2 million fastA-records from a file with about 4 million records. I can't grep because for some strange reason it just fills up all the RAM and nothing changes. A work around with while-looping through the pattern file takes too long. Any suggestions on how to do that?
