Computercraft is looking for dynamic Product Managers to help develop and manage cutting-edge web products at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These web products are the preeminent, open-source tools and technologies used worldwide to contribute to scientific research and discovery, facilitate the work of clinicians, and improve human health.

As Product Manager, you will work at the center of decision makers, users, and a cross-functional team of scientists and programmers, driving the creation of prominent technology products. You will identify user personas, define and discover their needs, and develop and implement products and features to meet them.

Computercraft is helping to grow a team of Product Managers, and we have several new Product Manager positions to support various web-based NCBI products:

• A set of related tools, SciENcv, MyBibliography, and MyNCBI. SciENcv is used by researchers to assemble the professional information needed for participation in federally funded research, MyBibliography is used to save citations and manage peer-reviewed article compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy, and MyNCBI retains user information and database preferences providing customized services for many NCBI databases (e.g., searches, display formats, filtering options).

• Sequence Read Archive (SRA), the largest publicly available repository of high throughput sequencing data. The archive accepts data from all branches of life as well as metagenomic and environmental surveys. SRA makes sequence data available to the research community to enhance reproducibility and allow for new discoveries.

• The Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP), an archive and distribution center for the description and results of studies that investigate the interaction of genotype and phenotype in humans. These studies include genome-wide association studies (GWAS), medical resequencing, and molecular diagnostic assays, as well as association between genotype and non-clinical traits.

• Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST), which finds regions of local similarity between sequences. The program compares nucleotide or protein sequences to sequence databases and calculates the statistical significance of matches. BLAST can be used to infer functional and evolutionary relationships between sequences as well as help identify members of gene families.

NCBI has one of the top 400 most visited websites worldwide, and its wide range of applications serve more users and more data than nearly any other U.S. Government agency. NCBI provides free access to petabytes of biomedical and genomic information, and scientists all over the world use its products.

What We Need:

• At least 5 years of experience as a product manager bringing public-facing web, data, and cloud products to market

• Demonstrated, hands-on experience delivering real products and features as part of or leading one or more Scrum teams, either as product owner or Scrum master

• Experience working on large and cross-functional projects in a complex, policy-driven environment

• Experience gathering data through user research (establishing KPIs, using Google Analytics, performing usability testing), analyzing data, and applying findings in decision making

• Expertise in UI/UX and user-centered design

• Excellent project management, communications, and consensus-building skills

• Ability to balance multiple goals and deadlines under resource constraints

• Ability to incorporate and diplomatically resolve conflicting direction from multiple management, user, and technical stakeholders

• Knowledge of the technical software development process, including Agile technology

What We’d Like:

• Familiarity with public health, biological sciences, molecular biology, or genetic variation

• Formal training or prior product management experience in the biological sciences, particularly molecular biology or bioinformatics

• Demonstrated active involvement in online bioinformatics community forums (e.g., BioStars, SeqAnswers)

• Experience working with researchers in the publication of journal articles and submission of grant applications

• Experience with data visualization, accessibility, Search Engine Optimization, and software QA/testing
