Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/), Biosciences Area Office (https://biosciences.lbl.gov/) has an opening for a Manager of Laboratory, Safety and Facility Operations to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will be responsible for the short- and long-term planning, organization, coordination, management, and day-to-day oversight of all aspects of the Laboratory Operations, Safety, and Facility Teams. The successful candidate will work closely with management, project managers, principal investigators, post-docs, staff research associates, graduate students, undergraduates, and administrators to help attain the goals and objectives of all funded projects in the operations center.
This is a critical leadership position for the Emery Station Operations Center and will manage the infrastructure required to support the scientific needs of the researchers involved in all scientific programs on the 3rd and 4th floor of the Emery Station East (ESE) building.
What You Will Do:
• Manage six to seven direct reports and three indirect reports in relevant technical and support areas. Will guide process development in each area of work, provide professional development and accountability, and coaching/mentoring.
• Supervise the ESOC Division Safety Coordinator, the ESOC Facilities Manager and the ABPDU Facilities Manager and Lab Operation Staff.
• Develop work performance standards; schedule and assign work and develop priorities; provide technical expertise as needed or requested; take appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions.
• Provide leadership and oversight to manage the short- and long-term strategic planning and organization of all technical, safety, and facility management aspects of ESE laboratories for all research divisions and programs.
• Manage chemical inventory ensuring safe storage and appropriate records are maintained; and disposal is safely and responsibly coordinated. Review chemical purchases and chemical experiment proposals.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive lab and safety orientation for new researchers and research staff. Ensure that all personnel are adequately trained in fundamental lab rules and safety and maintain all training records.
• Participate in long-range planning and budgeting processes; determining and strategizing project personnel and equipment needs; developing and monitoring the laboratory, safety, and facilities budget; approving purchase and installation of equipment and supplies. Obtain and document quotes/bids. Manage and oversee procurement processes for all lab purchasing.
• Foster collaborative working relationships with all levels of employees at the center. Partner seamlessly and effectively with colleagues in Environment Health and Safety (EH&S), Facilities, the Biosciences Area, and all members of partner institutions as needed. Participate in appropriate Berkeley Lab committees and Lab-wide projects.
• Lead group meetings related to lab, safety, and facility management and practices.
• Ensure that lab and personnel are compliant with all regulatory issues associated with Institutional safety. Participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) pertaining to institute safety. Roll out and manage procedures as appropriate.
• Manage chemical inventory ensuring safe storage and appropriate records are maintained; and disposal is safely and responsibly coordinated.
• Ensure that construction and renovation projects are effectively managed. Ensure that moves, work requests, emergency response, and off-hours support, badging, key, and telecommunication orders are effectively managed.
• In the event of an office laboratory move, coordinate lab and office setup, expansion, relocation, and closure.
What is Required: • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience with preferably a minimum of 8 years of related work experience in laboratory management. • Experience in supporting research in a large institution or laboratory. • Demonstrated experience in a molecular biology, plant biology, and analytical chemistry research laboratory. • Experience developing laboratory methods and SOPs. • Demonstrated experience in program/project management. • Experience and knowledge in the supervision of direct reports, performance management, training, and process improvement. • Working knowledge of material transfer agreements (MTA), laboratory EH&S requirements, and procedures and practices. Strong problem-solving skills and analytical ability. Ability to assess situations accurately and take effective action. • Ability to independently establish priorities; perform multiple projects simultaneously with short deadlines and frequent interruptions, anticipate and identify potential issues; and complete assignments in a timely manner. • Familiarity with state and federal guidelines and regulations pertinent to laboratory safety and security. • Strong organizational skills; strong leadership and management skills; strong written and verbal communication skills. • Composition and editing skills sufficient to edit and compose lab-wide communication, progress reports, and web content for grammar, syntax, style, scientific accuracy, and clarity. • Advanced experience using enterprise and desktop databases and information systems such as Google Suite tools, QR codes, inventory systems, Microsoft tools, JIRA, etc.
Desired Qualifications: • Minimum of eight years of working in a life science laboratory environment. • MS/Ph.D. degree. • Project Management or PMP Certification. • Experience handling a variety of hazardous chemicals safely. • Knowledge of safe working practices for handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals.
