Informatician / Data Analyst

Job Purpose

We are seeking to appoint an experienced bioinformatician to support research groups within the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology (WCIP) at the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation.

The postholder will perform robust and publishable analysis of high-throughput data, statistical analyses, development and maintenance of software pipelines and tools, and the organisation and management of data generated by WCIP. Further we expect the postholder to contribute to formulating and submitting research publications and research proposals, as well as to helping manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities arise.

This position is funded until 30 September 2023 and will be line managed by Dr Kathryn Crouch.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis of high-throughput data emerging from WCIP research, including but not limited to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and single-cell sequencing.

  • Develop automated workflows for data processing and analysis.

  • Work collaboratively with WCIP investigators and their collaborators on projects undertaken by the groups.

  • Liaise with users in experimental design.

  • Liaise with the III bioinformatics service and Glasgow Polyomics in working towards optimal workflows for data analysis.

  • To work closely with WCIP VEuPathDB staff in integration of WCIP data into VEuPathDB databases.

  • Support teaching activities, which may include supporting practical exercises in taught MSc and Undergraduate programs and supervising student projects.

  • To produce publication-quality figures and assist in writing manuscripts that incorporate data acquired from WCIP research.

  • To provide training/support to end users in the understanding and use of software tools.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and departmental research group activities.

  • Assist in the supervision and training of research or technical staff where appropriate.

  • Participate in local research groups to build up networks with other colleagues in the field.

  • Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

  • Contribute to computational administration duties of the WCIP team as appropriate.

  • Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by your line manager.

For appointment at grade 7

  • Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility in relation to data analysis.

  • To produce publication quality figures and take the lead on writing papers for publication in peer reviewed journals.

  • Presenting results at appropriate national and international conferences

  • Be proactive in developing and enhancing external collaborations

Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills & Experience



A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent in either bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or mathematics, in a biological domain, or equivalent professional qualifications in a relevant academic/research discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Experience in analysis of high throughput or genome-scale data sequencing, proteomics or metabolomics data.

For Appointment at Grade 7

A3 Scottish Credit Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4 or equivalent)

A4 Extensive theoretical and practical understanding of analysis of high-throughput of genome scale sequencing, proteomics or metabolomics data.


B1 Masters level degree or working towards or completed PhD or equivalent degree in a related field.

B2 Experience in analysis of data generated using single cell sequencing technologies (scRNA-seq, CITE-seq etc) or metabolomics

B3 Knowledge of parasite biology (kinetoplastid/apicomplexa)



C1 Strong programming skills in at least one relevant language (e.g, Python or R)

C2 Life sciences related data analysis skills

C3 Ability to manage and progress multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines

C4 Highly motivated, ability to use initiative and quick to learn new techniques.

C5 Highly developed problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.

C6 Ability to work independently to progress projects and also integrate within a team

C7 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.

C8 Ability to generate novel informatics tools

C9 Ability to work in a Linux/Unix software environment

For Appointment at Grade 7

C10 Ability to communicate highly complex/technical information and data verbally and in writing for a range of audiences.

C11 Demonstrated software or related outputs of high impact.

C12 Ability to supervise projects to successful delivery.


D1 Object-oriented programming skills

D2 Experience developing web-based tools

D3 Experience in a statistical computing language (e.g., R or similar software, or machine learning applications)

D4 Experience with administration of Linux resources



E1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in specialist subject/discipline and of research/teaching methods and techniques relevant to project subject area, demonstrated through experience.

E2 Experience of Unix/Linux operating systems.

E3 Experience of bioinformatics and computer-based research in a biological field.

E4 Experience of scientific writing.

E5 Experience in analysing high throughput sequencing data.

E6 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs (such as publications or reports) in a timely and efficient manner.

For Appointment at Grade 7

E7 A track record consisting of publications, including at least one as first author, in appropriate-impact international scientific journals.

E8 Experience of communicating with biologists in order to understand bioinformatics requirements and explain the techniques used and results generated.

E9 Experience in delivering research or technical support seminars.

E10 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design and analysis of experiments and drafting of papers.


F1 Experience demonstrated by an emerging track record of publications in a relevant field.

F2 Experience of academic or industrial collaborations.

F3 Experience in supervision or providing bioinformatics training.

F4 Experience in evolutionary biology or genetics.

Standard Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Technical & Specialist Grade, level 7, £35,845 - £40,322 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and has funding available until 30 September 2023. Applications to work on a part time basis, eg 50% will also be considered. New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months. The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities¿ Superannuation Scheme.
