Postdoctoral/Bioinformatician Position in Neuro-Virology

A postdoctoral/bioinformatician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Igor Koralnik, Chief of the Neuro-Infectious Diseases and Global Neurology Division at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in the Department of Neurology.

By working closely with multifaceted teams of the Neurology department and international collaborators, the successful candidate will be well placed to undertake cutting-edge research aimed at elucidating the role of viruses in a variety of Neurologic diseases. These include patients with encephalitis or meningitis, as well as individuals with degenerative or inflammatory conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis. By exploring the composition of the entire Virome in patients with neurologic diseases including those with COVID-19, we hope that novel treatment and prevention options will be uncovered.

Using data generated by our novel ViroFind platform as well as large-scale next generation sequencing data, the successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in developing and executing internationally recognized research projects aimed at:

• identifying known viruses and virus variants associated with disease • assessing and characterizing yet undiscovered viruses • investigating potential virus integration sites in the human genome • correlating viromic and human genetic data

Requirements: We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented postdoc/bioinformatician to join our team. Applicants would preferably have a PhD or MD/PhD within a biomedical or bioinformatics subject (preferably virology or genetics related). Applicants with a Masters in bioinformatics may be considered provided they can demonstrate extensive and relevant work experience. Applicants must have already graduated, or anticipate graduating within the next 2 months. A strong record of peer-reviewed publications, including first authorship will be a plus, but is not a requirement.

Candidates must have expertise in at least one of these areas:

• Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, techniques and databases. • Processing, managing, analyzing and visualizing large-scale Next Generation Sequencing data. • Good programming skills eg. must be very familiar with the following languages: Perl, R, Python. • Using Linux based high performance computational clusters, and writing/running shell scripts.

Other desirable attributes include:

• Experience in/working knowledge of biostatistics/statistical viromics or genetics

Interested applicants should email a CV, a brief description of research interests and contact details for three references to Igor.Koralnik@northwestern.edu.
