The Bioinformatics Training Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing a broad portfolio of educational resources to support data-intensive science through the Hutch Data Core (HDC). This program focuses on teaching in-person and online short courses in computational and bioinformatic methods to the scientific research community at Fred Hutch. The role includes curating or developing educational content and training documentation to support the efforts of the HDC and its mission to expand the data science capabilities of the UW/Fred Hutch Cancer Consortium research community.
Responsibilities
The Bioinformatics Training Specialist reports to the acting Director of the Hutch Data Core (Sr. Director of the Molecular and Cellular Scientific Resources). The specialist is the lead and primary point of contact for bioinformatics and data-intensive technology training, and is responsible for guiding the planning, implementation, and assessment of all training courses, materials, and one-on-one consultation.
- Oversee all bioinformatics training and educational activities, including the development, maintenance, delivery and ongoing evaluation of institution-wide training content and materials via both in-person and online opportunities
- Work with HDC staff to develop and deliver timely, current and effective institution-wide training in computing and bioinformatics skills
- Work with technology core directors to assess the outreach and educational needs of their user-base
- Work with members of Center IT and Scientific Computing groups on customizing and maintaining educational content specific to the Fred Hutch on-premise and cloud-based computing environment
- Design, develop, and maintain a centralized educational resource supporting courses/seminars, e-libraries, and drop-in consulting both in-person and through online forums such as Slack
- Brand, market, and advertise the available educational offerings by creating a digital presence that brings awareness and draws interest
- Facilitate both a seminar series and a series of group-led “journal club” discussions around current topics in bioinformatics for the Fred Hutch community
- Collaborate with local Slack workspace administrators to create, monitor, and moderate HDC-associated Slack channels as appropriate
- Maintain and update HDC-related content for the Fred Hutch SciWiki
- Define, collect, and report-out training activity metrics to be used to communicate success to the HDC Faculty Advisory Committee and for future inclusion in the UW/Fred Hutch Cancer Consortium Support Grant (CCSG) updates and proposals
- Other responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
- MS or PhD in science education or a pertinent scientific field
- 4+ years of research and/or college-level education teaching
- Demonstrated competency in R, Python, or related language
- Experience with standards and methods in bioinformatics
- Excellent presentation, writing, and editing skills
