The role

As part of the bioinformatics team, you’ll lead the development and prototyping of our flagship bioinformatics workflows (such as: RNAseq (single-cell, bulk, spatial), ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq (single-cell and bulk), proteomics, etc.). For a given pipeline, you’ll research available analysis methods, compare and contrast existing bioinformatics tooling options, and define and implement a prototype best-practices workflow. You’ll assist our full-stack engineering team in productionizing this prototype into a mature product offering. You’ll engage directly with customers (both biologists and bioinformaticians) to test, troubleshoot, and enhance deployed workflows, and use their feedback to enable our team to continually improve our product. You’ll ensure the technical success of our client engagements, and build bespoke bioinformatics solutions upon customer request. This role is a great opportunity for candidates looking to make foundational contributions to a first-in-class bioinformatics platform at a fast-paced and rapidly growing tech-bio startup with a culture of empathy, efficiency, and candor.

Watershed Informatics is the first end-to-end bio-IT managed service provider; we massively catalyze biomedical discovery by transforming how scientists learn from big data. Our platform dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of completing bioinformatics analyses and enables life sciences organizations of any size to perform mission-critical bioinformatics analyses at an order of magnitude less cost and complexity than existing solutions. Combining our team of stellar software engineers’ and bioinformaticians' experiences at MIT, Harvard, and Carnegie-Mellon, we have built a product that scores of clients like Revitope Oncology, SQZ Biotech, and Rarebase rave about, and after raising $5.5M (seed round led by Bessemer Venture Partners), we are rapidly growing our bioinformatics group

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of new bioinformatics workflows, such as: whole genome/exome sequencing, RNAseq (single-cell, bulk, spatial), ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq (single-cell and bulk), proteomics, and metabolomics
  • Collaborate with our full-stack engineering team on making these workflows efficient and performant
  • Engage directly with customers (both biologists and bioinformaticians) on their deployment of the Watershed platform, ensure the technical success of client engagements, and communicate customer feedback and feature requests to the broader team
  • Test, troubleshoot, and enhance customer workflows with and on behalf of customers, and lead design and development reviews of these workflows
  • Propose and implement more sophisticated, bespoke bioinformatics analyses upon customer request

Qualifications

  • PhD-level expertise in developing end-to-end bioinformatics pipelines (5+ years of experience in bioinformatics)
  • Strong biology background and excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and data science best practices (Quality-control, exploratory data analysis, existing industry standard open-source tools)
  • Experience in Python, R, and/or MATLAB

Benefits and culture:

  • Competitive compensation packages, including health insurance
  • Flexible working hours and a hybrid work environment
  • Unlimited UberEats during work
  • Team bonding activities and company-wide events
  • Top-down focus on employee wellness and work-life balance
