As a fairly new student to the world of bioinformatics, I was hoping I could begin to utilize the skills I’ve learned thus far from the biostars handbook on a project. Is anyone here working on a project I could perhaps jump in on and help out to get more practical experience? Are there any open source project opportunities for beginners or project ideas that I could start?

I am a molecular and cellular biology student and I am looking into bioinformatics/computation biology/systems biology graduate programs and was hoping I could get a jump start on the programming side of things so I could add it to my CV.

In case no one responds with a project, I would consider the following:

  1. If you compile a list of open source bioinformatics software, have you scoured through it and examined the repos to see which are active, which are not, and which might benefit from some attention?

  2. Do you have an area of interest? Is there some topic or informatic area of interest that you can look into and create something for?

  3. Is there any previous experience you have of applying software to biology that you can extend and develop into a repo?

  4. Is there anyone you know who is working on something interesting, or something that could benefit from either an informatic approach, or could benefit from some tool that you could develop?

  5. There are a lot of large data sets out that that could benefit from cool programmatic visualizations, e.g. interactive/dynamic data maps in D3, etc.. Independent creation of cool stuff is something I highly value when I examine CVs.
